What You Need To Know About Automotive Batteries
The battery in your car hasn’t really changed much for 70 years. Automotive batteries are still a lead-acid design, with six cells that contain lead plates and a hydrochloric acid electrolyte. Each cell produces about two volts apiece; connected in series, they add up to around 12 volts. When the battery discharges, the sulfuric acid in the battery loses its acidity and returns to water again, while the lead plates become coated with sulfate. When the battery charges again, the sulfate on the battery plates returns to the acidic electrolyte solution.
Unfortunately, any battery that can be recharged – such as the one in your phone or laptop – can only stand so many charge/discharge cycles before they weaken. Even the best automotive batteries only last for about three or four years before they start to degrade.
We make battery service part of your regular preventive maintenance schedule. If you suspect your battery might be starting to weaken, we can test it for cranking amperage and overall condition…and if it looks like you’re in need of a battery soon, we stock a wide range of top-brand batteries for just about any vehicle on the road. Don’t find yourself stuck someplace and hoping for the kindness of a stranger with jumper cables.
