It's been just over five years since we started Good News Auto. Five years since two people (Chris and Kimberly) decided to start a mechanic shop. We wanted to start something for our community, something we could use as a vehicle to help people move forward and if not avoid crisis at least help it to not hurt quite as much! It has been a very interesting five years. We have learned ALOT. For those of you who don't know our story, a bit of history. Good News Auto was started as a social business in response to a need that we saw in the community. A need for people to learn about their vehicles so they would be better able to plan for crisis and for keeping their vehicle safe and on the road. We decided to this through our JumpStart Fund.
I (Kimberly) had worked in non profits for many years and one of the challenges I saw first hand was that there wasn't help for people until they had lost everything. Many charities aren't allowed to help people until they are completely financially broken. One of the things we wanted to accomplish through Good News was to help people before the crisis snowballed out of people's control.
Chris, on the other hand, had no idea what he was getting himself into! At the beginning we had considered buying and selling vehicles as another way to create income and that's what he thought he was signing on for. Imagine his surprise when he realized someone had to answer phones, book in vehicles, order parts, organize mechanic's time and about a million other things involved with running a business.
So here we are, five years later and we have seven staff, many amazing customers and dozens of vehicle education workshops behind us in the rear view mirror. We would like to use this blog to continue learning, teaching and changing the way business is done.
